THE REAL NAMES POLICY BY FACEBOOK

Facebook stated that users must use the names that they use in real life. The company asked its users to refrain from including symbols, numbers, phrases, titles, or characters from different languages in the name section. Although, Facebook allows its users to use nicknames instead of real names, pretending to be someone else is prohibited.

FACEBOOK GIVES REASONING TO ITS POLICY

The product manager of Facebook, Todd Gage, mentioned some of the company’s reasoning behind the aforementioned policy. According to Gage, people are more accountable for their actions when they use the name they are known by. In addition, the policy makes it harder for bullies to smear others reputations and harass users.

HOW THIS POLICY AFFECTS PROSTITUTES, GAYS, AND DRAG QUEENS

Back then Facebook used to delete accounts of gays, drag queens, and prostitutes who used their nicknames for their FB accounts. Later, the company issued a public apology for those incidents. Facebook made a decision to give minorities more power.
